There are lifestyle measures that we can all put in place to reduce the risk of developing Osteoporosis.

UNDERSTANDING OSTEOPOROSIS: A LONG-TERM APPROACH TO GOOD BONE HEALTH.

In Osteoporosis the density of bones decreases and their brittleness increases although there is no change in size or composition. In many cases, therefore, there are no obvious symptoms of the problem. People with the condition will be very susceptible to fracture after just minimal trauma and, indeed, that is often when the problem first comes to light.

Often described as the silent epidemic, each year Osteoporosis results in some 200,000 fractures in the UK. Nearly one third of orthopaedic beds in our hospitals are taken up by patients who have the condition.

Fractures in older people are of great concern – being so debilitating and distressing in their own right and, often, leading to other more serious complications. Other people, as they grow older, may find themselves developing a hunched back (Dowager’s Hump). This is because the weakened vertebrae of the spine start collapsing even from normal daily movements such as coughing or lifting.

We are indebted to The National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) for providing a most valuable overview article concerning the characteristics of Osteoporosis and what can be done to guard against the risk.

We are also pleased to be able to provide an introductory description and special purchasing offer for the CalMag effervescent supplement.
