It is undeniable that the preferred choice of most older people is to stay living independently in their own homes, for as long as possible. It is also clear that as people get older, they often become more vulnerable to falls, accidents and medical emergencies.
Telecare, plays an increasingly vital role in improving the confidence and wellbeing of older people living independently; in reducing unplanned hospital admissions; in reducing delayed hospital discharges; and of course, in delaying and in some cases avoiding long term residential care.
Telecare involves placing various discreet sensors around the home - connected to a response centre, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If a sensor detects an incident, such as a fall, it will raise an alert to the response centre or designated carer - thus enabling the appropriate action
to be taken without delay.
Whilst telecare is not designed to replace human contact from families, friends and care providers, it can provide an additional source of support for anyone requiring a little extra reassurance. It can also help give increased peace of mind to carers, who can be safe in the knowledge that if an incident were to occur they would be notified immediately.
