For many people, taking lots of different medicines can be part of day-to-day life, but it can also be confusing. Having a chat with your GP or Pharmacist can really help make sure you are getting the best from your medication – and ensure that any problems you are having are resolved. You may just want to ask some questions.

Visiting your GP

Here are a few pointers to help make sure you get the most out of your GP appointment

Before you go

• Make a list of the questions you want to ask

• Take a note of all the medicines you currently take, including any medicines or supplements you buy.

During the appointment

• Don’t be afraid to take notes

• If you are unsure about what the doctor has said ask him/her to explain

• Ensure you understand why the doctor is prescribing any medicines, how and when you should take them.

After the appointment

• If you still have any questions about the medicine you have been prescribed your pharmacist will be happy to help.

At home

• Keep an updated list of your medicines on the fridge or door of your medical cabinet.

• Give a copy to your family or caregiver.

• Use a pill organiser, or a reminder chart – so you can easily see that you have or have not taken your pills. (Your pharmacist can help with this)

• Keep your medication in a safe place out of the reach of children.

• Always order your repeat medicines in plenty of time.

If you have any concerns about your medication, ask your Pharmacist for help.

What your local Tesco Pharmacy can do for you

If you have any worries about your medication your Pharmacist will be able to advise – they are experts in medicines and their effects.

• Make sure the Pharmacist has an updated list of all your medications, so they can check for possible harmful interactions.

• Check the name, dose and directions for taking when collecting your prescription.

• Medication can sometimes look different when it is made by different companies – but if you are ever in any doubt that you have the correct medicine, ask.

Tesco has a Repeat Prescription Collection Service. It’s easy and convenient and will save you trips to your doctors. It just takes 3 simple steps next time you’re at your regular Tesco Pharmacy:

• Check your surgery is part of the scheme at the Pharmacy counter.

• Fill in a simple form at the Pharmacy counter.

• The Pharmacy team will pick up your prescription once you have ordered it – to have it waiting for you within 72 hours.

Medicine Review

If you’re taking prescription medicine it’s important to review this with your GP regularly.

The amount of medication you need and the dosage can change depending on lifestyle changes, weight loss and any exercise you undertake. If the medication you are taking doesn’t seem to be working, or if you’re experiencing side effects, consult your doctor or Pharmacist straight away.

Tesco Pharmacy offers a free NHS 'Understanding Your Medicines' service, to help you make sure you’re getting the most from your medicines.
