AN ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO OPTIONS AVAILABLE
FOR INDIVIDUAL HOMES AND CARE SETTINGS.
Most older people would prefer to stay living independently in their
own homes for as long as possible. Unfortunately, as people get older they often become more vulnerable to falls, accidents and medical emergencies.
Telecare plays a vital role in managing these risks – and solutions can be tailored to meet the needs of the individual to deliver a personalised level of care. This can range from sensors to detect incidents, such as a fall, a fire or carbon monoxide leak, to a more comprehensive package that helps users manage long-term health conditions. Telecare can prevent unplanned hospital admissions and delay the move into long-term residential care for older people. Whilst Telecare is not designed to replace human contact from families and care providers, it can provide an additional source of support and reassurance for the individual.
Telecare sensors are connected to a monitoring centre, which offers support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This means that when an alert is raised from a Telecare sensor, the appropriate action can be taken without delay, which could be contacting a carer or family member. This constant monitoring also provides peace of mind for carers and family members, who are safe in the knowledge that if an incident did occur they would be notified immediately.
Telehealth solutions allow patients with long-term conditions to manage their conditions in their own homes. A telehealth monitor records their vital signs on a daily basis and this information is sent to a local health centre via the telephone. Community healthcare professionals study this information and slight changes will be detected and the appropriate action taken – before the changes can develop into something that could require admission to hospital. Telehealth solutions can improve the quality of life for patients, improve their awareness of their condition and reduce the number of hospital admissions, by taking proactive action.
